Zip Lining in La Fortuna
Costa Rica invented the canopy zip line, and Arenal has some of the longest cables in the country. The courses are not interchangeable, though — the difference between them is bigger than most booking sites let on.
The two kinds of course
Canopy tours run shorter cables between platforms inside the forest. You stop often, you are among the trees, and a guide points things out between runs. Better for nervous first-timers and for anyone who came for the rainforest as much as the ride.
Long-line courses string much longer cables between ridges, out over the valley rather than through the trees. Fewer stops, far more speed, and views back toward the volcano you cannot get any other way. This is the one people mean when they say the zip lining here is world class.
The extras worth understanding
- Superman line. You go face-down and head-first in a full body harness instead of sitting in a seat. Usually the longest, fastest cable on the course, and the one that shows up in everyone's photos.
- Tarzan swing. A rope pendulum off a platform. Genuinely the most alarming thirty seconds of the day for most people, and always optional.
- Rappel descents. Some courses finish by lowering you off a platform rather than walking you down.
The course nearest the lodge
Sky Adventures is the closest, and it is close: 10 minutes and 4.7 kilometres from our front door, on the same road out of El Castillo. Eight cables strung between two mountains, with the tram ride up included, so you gain the height sitting down rather than hiking it. On a clear morning you are looking at the volcano on one side and Lake Arenal on the other for most of the way down.
That proximity changes what the day looks like. Most people staying in La Fortuna town drive 25 to 30 minutes each way to reach a course out here. From the lodge you can be harnessed up before the first vans arrive, be finished by late morning, and be back at the pool for lunch. For a group with small children or anyone who tires easily, being ten minutes from home rather than half an hour matters more than it sounds.
What the day actually looks like
You arrive, sign a waiver, and get fitted with a harness, helmet and gloves. That takes about twenty minutes for a group and is the least interesting part of the morning. Then a tram, a truck or a short walk takes you to the first platform.
From there it is a sequence: clip on, go, brake, unclip, walk to the next platform. Guides handle both ends of every cable, so the only thing you are responsible for is letting go. A full course runs two to three hours including the ride up and the walking between stations. Nobody is rushed, and anyone who decides at the top that they would rather not can walk down instead — it happens on most tours and the guides are entirely used to it.
Practical limits
Operators around Arenal generally set a minimum weight near 40 pounds and a maximum near 250. Both matter for braking — too light and you stall short of the platform, too heavy and you arrive fast. Confirm the numbers when booking, particularly for a mixed group, so nobody finds out at the top of the mountain.
Closed shoes are required. Leave loose glasses, hats and phones behind unless they are tethered; things dropped from a cable are not recovered.
Weather
Courses run in light rain — this is a rainforest and they would never operate otherwise — but they close for lightning. Morning slots are both drier and less likely to be cancelled. More on La Fortuna weather →
Booking for a group
This is the activity that most needs advance booking. Courses run in timed waves with a fixed number of guides, so a group of fifteen cannot simply turn up. Book several days ahead in high season.
