The per-person charge above 16 covers that guest's breakfast, linens and toiletries — it is a cost pass-through, not a markup.

At a full house that is roughly the price of a mid-range hotel room per person — except everyone has their own bathroom, you have a kitchen, a pool and a deck, and there is nobody else on the property.

What most groups actually book

Two numbers from our own booking history, in case they help you plan. The most common group size is 16 — more bookings land on exactly 16 guests than on any other number — and that is also the point where breakfast is still fully included, so roughly three bookings in four never pay the per-person supplement at all. And most groups stay three or four nights, with about one in eight taking a full week.

Which is why the rate is built the way it is: the included-breakfast threshold sits at the size of an ordinary group here, not below it.

When the lodge fills up

More than half of all stays here start between December and March, the dry season, and February and March are the busiest months of the year. If you want those dates, book early — they routinely go a year ahead, and a 10-bedroom property only has one of each date to sell.

May is the quietest month, followed by April, June and July. Those are green-season weeks: more afternoon rain, greener everything, far better availability, and the dates most likely to still be open at short notice. They are also the months we would rather host a retreat than anything else, because the rain lands in the afternoon when a retreat is in session anyway. Against booking a block of hotel rooms

The comparison a group actually faces is not one room against another — it is twelve hotel rooms against one lodge. Twelve couples in La Fortuna at $150 a night is $1,800 before anyone has eaten. The same 24 guests here is $1,510, breakfast for all of them included, in a house nobody else is staying in.

$150 is a typical mid-range La Fortuna double — check the rate for your own dates and run the same arithmetic. The gap widens as the group grows, because our price is per property and theirs is per room.
