The Hanging Bridges of La Fortuna
Rainforest is frustrating from the ground. Everything interesting happens thirty metres above you, in a canopy you can hear but not see. The hanging bridges fix that, and they are the most reliable wildlife hours in the area.
What the walk is like
A loop of gravel trail strung together by suspension bridges, most of it easy walking, with the bridges carrying you across ravines at canopy height. Mistico — the best known of them — runs roughly three kilometres with a mix of long bridges and forest path, and takes most people two to three hours at an unhurried pace.
The bridges are steel-framed with high mesh sides. They flex slightly as you walk, which unsettles some people for the first one and stops mattering by the third.
Take the guide
This is the single piece of advice worth acting on. The forest does not present itself to visitors. A naturalist guide carries a spotting scope and knows which tree the sloth has been sitting in for the last four days, where the eyelash vipers coil, and how to pick a motionless bird out of motionless leaves.
Unguided, most people cross beautiful bridges and see very little. Guided, the same walk produces sloths, toucans, oropendolas, snakes and frogs. It is a genuinely different experience for a small difference in cost.
Mistico is not the only one
Mistico gets the name recognition and the tour-bus traffic, but it is not the only canopy walk in the area, and for anyone staying on the El Castillo side it is not always the obvious choice.
Sky Walk, at Sky Adventures. Bridges on the same site as the zip line course, ten minutes from the lodge rather than twenty-seven. Fewer bridges than Mistico and a steeper trail, but you can pair it with the zip lines in one morning and one drive, which for a group is a meaningfully simpler day.
Arenal Hanging Bridges. Closer to the volcano's north side and quieter than Mistico at peak hours. Similar length, similar terrain.
If you only do one and want the postcard version, do Mistico. If you are here for wildlife rather than the name, the quieter parks often produce more, simply because fewer feet on the bridges means less noise pushing animals away.
Getting there from the lodge
Mistico is 27 minutes and 15.6 kilometres from The Majestic Lodge — out of El Castillo, along the lake road, and round to the north side. It is one of the easier drives in the area and it is paved once you are off our access road.
Morning or afternoon?
Morning, for two reasons. Wildlife is more active early, and La Fortuna's afternoons tend to cloud over and rain — and while the walk is fine in the wet, the photography is not. More on the weather here →
If you are uneasy about heights
Worth saying plainly, because it stops people booking: these are not rope bridges. They are steel-framed, wide enough for two people to pass, floored solid, and walled with mesh sides taller than a child. They flex a little as you cross, in the way a long footbridge does, and that is the whole of it.
We have had guests in their eighties walk Mistico, and guests who described themselves as afraid of heights finish it and say the first bridge was the only hard one. If someone in the group genuinely cannot face it, the trail has ground-level sections and benches, and nobody has to cross anything to enjoy the forest.
Children are usually the least troubled people on the bridge. It is the parents who slow down.
What to bring
- Closed shoes with grip — the gravel gets slick in rain
- A rain jacket rather than an umbrella; you need both hands
- Insect repellent
- Binoculars if you own them, though the guide's scope is better
- Water — there is more climbing than the word "bridges" suggests
Going with a group
Bridge parks handle groups well, which is not true of everything around Arenal. The trail absorbs numbers, and guides typically take groups of ten to fifteen. Book ahead if there are more than a few of you so they can assign enough guides.
