About three hours by road — almost exactly the same as from San José, despite Liberia feeling like the far side of the country.
You head east out of Guanacaste's dry plains, and the landscape changes as you go: scrubby cattle country gives way to green hills, and then to rainforest. The final stretch runs along Lake Arenal, with the water on one side and the volcano rising ahead. It is the better of the two approaches by some distance.
The road around the lake is winding and narrow in places. It is not difficult, but it is not a road to rush, and it is genuinely unpleasant in the dark.
